About OpenColor

OpenColor is a free, independent web app that turns a Datacolor ColorReader (and the paint-brand rebrands built on the same CR100 hardware) into a cross-standard color matcher — no vendor app or account required.

It connects to the device over Web Bluetooth in Chrome or Edge, reads the measured CIELAB value, and finds the nearest named colors across ~11,400 references in eight systems (CSS, RAL Classic, Pantone C/U, NCS, Munsell, Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore), ranked by CIEDE2000. It’s installable as a PWA and works offline for browsing.

Privacy: everything runs client-side — your scans and history stay on your device and are never uploaded.

For developers & agents: an open, key-free match API (/api/match) and downloadable datasets (/data/all.json, llms.txt) are available.

Requires Chrome or Edge on desktop or Android. Web Bluetooth is unavailable on iPhone and iPad.

Color data. CIELAB values are provided for reference and interoperability. Some are published by their source; others are derived from published sRGB hex (each entry notes which). Proprietary color specifications — including Pantone, RAL, and NCS — belong to their owners; values shown are approximations and must not be treated as certified or authoritative representations of those standards.

No warranty. Provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. Not intended for color-critical, safety-critical, or certification use. You are responsible for verifying any color decision against an official source.
